Embracing Sexuality: Dr. Libby on Joy, Pleasure, and Redefining ‘Addiction

Dr Libby is the one who coined the term “sex positive” in 1976. Later in this interview he gives the intended definition when he coined it, which was about being joyful around our sexuality. Dr. Libby believes sexuality is a very integral part of the human condition although politicians try to deny that, the science says they can’t. He shares that exploring our sexuality makes us happy and “normal”. He reiterates a sentiment other experts have shared in the Life In Red series which is that porn addiction, sex addiction, camming addiction etc are not true addictions because sexuality is part of you and you are the one making the hormones and chemicals released and you cannot truly be addicted to your own chemicals. You can develop unhealthy behaviors in these areas, but not addiction, according to Dr. Libby. Dr Libby says “people in control don’t want us to experience pleasure because they’re afraid that somehow will lead to us loosing an orderly society.” He believes in order to get out of a sexual rut which much of society has, they need to share and act on more fantasies and focus more on pleasure. He also said we don’t have enough research around our sexuality and we need a lot more. He wishes the world knew that sexuality is not something to be afraid of, but embraced.
